Chapter 4 Vocabulary: Collective Rights

Affirm~to validate and express commitment to something.

Collective Identity~the shared identity of a group of people, especially because  of a common language and  culture.

Collective Rights~rights guarenteed to specific groups in canadian society for historical and constitutional reasons.First Nations~the indigenous peoples of Canada.

Sovereignty~supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community.


Annuity~a  specified income payable at stated intervals for a fixed or a contingent period, often for the recipient's life, in consideration of a stipulated premium paid either in prior installment payments or in a single payment.

Official Language Minority~

Anglophone~an English-speaking person, especially a native speaker of English.


Francophone~speaking French, especially as a member of a French-speaking population.

Assimilate~ to bring into conformity with the customs, attitudes, etc., of a group, nation, or the like; adapt or adjust: to assimilate the new immigrants.
