Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms~~~~Vocab

Fundamental Rights/Fundamental Freedoms

~Fundamental rights are a generally-regarded set of entitlements in the context of a legal system, wherein such system is itself said to be based upon this same set of basic, fundamental, or inalienable entitlements or "rights."

~Example~Freedom of speech is on of the best examples of a fundamental freedom.

 


 

  Legal Rights

~Legal
rights
are those bestowed on to a person by the law of aparticular political and legal system, and therefore relative to specific cultures and governments.

~Example~ Youth have specific legal rights.



 

Mobility Rights

~A human right concept that the constitutions of numerous states respect. It asserts that a citizen of a state in which that citizen is present has the liberty to travel, reside in, and/or work in any part of the state where one pleases within the limits of respect for the liberty and rights of others

~Example~ It asserts that a citizen of a state in which that citizen is present has the liberty to travel, reside in, and/or work in any part of the state where one pleases within the limits of respect for the liberty and rights of others,


 



 

Democratic Rights

~Everyone has the right to hold opinions without interference.

~Example~  Voting is a democratic right.


 



 

Equality Rights

~A social state of affairs in which all people within a specific society or isolated group have the same status in a certain respect.

~Example~ Equality rights are a social state of affairs in which all people within a specific society or isolated group have the same status in a certain respect



 

Discrimination

~Treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or
thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or
thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial
and
religious intolerance and
discrimination.

~Example~ Treating someone differently because they have a different background than you is discrimination.


 

Prejudice

~Any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.

~Example~ Prejudice (or  is making a judgment or assumption about someone or something before having enough knowledge to be able to do so with guaranteed accuracy, or "judging a book by its cover".

 


 

Diversity

~The state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness.

~Example~ Every person is different and diverse in their own way.



 

Constitution

~A special set of laws that establish a framework of governance.

~Example~ A constitution is a set of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is governed



 

Indian Act

~Federal legislation related to the rights and status of First Nations people ("status Indians") first passed in 1876 and amended several times.

~Example~ The Indian Act, is a Canadian statute that concerns registered Indians, their bands, and the system of Indian reserves



 

 Labour Unions

~An organization of workers that act to protect workers rights and interests.

~Example~ an organization of workers that have banded together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions.

Definitions Chapter 2

Fair/Equitable-
Governed by rules that apply to everyone,
taking into account induvidual needs and circumstances.
 Example:in a school there are certain rules that everyone has to follow. 
The consequences are all the same.



Justice System 
The instutions and procedures for applying laws in a society.
Example:When someone is applying a law in society there is certain procedures to follow. Like you can't just pull someone over for driving safely.


Justice 
Applying laws.
  Example:When someone commits a crime then they have broken a law, justice is not being served.


Legeslation
Laws created through the legeslative process.
 
Example: The distracted driver law is a law created through the legislative process.



Validity
Reliability, based on critical assesment of source, facts and bias.   Example:When you tell a lie you are not presenting valid infortmation.

Community Service
Help in the community performed as part of a sentence, 
such as assisting with a community clean-up or food bank.
 
Example:If you do a crime the you will be punished for your wrong doings in different ways. One of them being Community Service. The Service usually relates to the crime the person commited.


Criminal Record
  A permanent record  of breaking the law , which is public information. A criminal record can bar you from some jobs, volunteer positions and travel to other countries.
Example: When you dop something wrong it is briught up in a court of law and put on a record that prevents you from doing certain things.


Sentence
 A consequence for a crime, such as imprisonment, determined by a court of law.
 
Example:When you do something wrong like steal you can get  a fine;go to jail.


Rehabilitation
To instill positive behaviors and attitudes.
  Example: When someone who is addicted to drugs can't help themselves they find others to teach them to stay clean.



Reintigration
To make part of again.
Example:To involve yourself in a group that has shunned you.

Current event
School money restored
The new Alberta Premier Alison Redford returned $107 million to school boards on Wednesday. She is delivering on her campaign promise. "This will make an impact in the lives of parents families and children." she said.
Who?Alison Redford.
What?$107 million dollars to school boards.
Where?
When?On Wednesday October 12 2011
Why?So that children can have a better education.
How does it impact my life?I'm in a school.
How does it impact Canada?Children in Alberta get a better education.

Bias

An opinion based on unchallenged assumptions

Example: I am given the choice between object one and object two. I have tried object two before but never object one, I will have a bias opinion towards object two, to which I will most likely choose.
